A historical photo (please see below) of a german PzIV D during the early days of Operation Barbarossa inspired me to realise this project. This photo you will find a.o. in "PzKpfw IV in Action", Squadron Signal Publications (upper Pic on page 11). The above digital compositions showing the finished scale model in a b/w environment.

Well, I got the ancient Tamiya kit of a PzIV D in hands for less and of course this model does not fit my current demands. So have had to do some refinements and superdetailings. The original tank was detached to german 6th Armoured Division and so I have to realise some special Equipment typically for that time and that unit. The turret box is one of that things. Furthermore the rain protection at drivers visor, the rectangle frame of re-installed Kugelblende 30 of radio operator's MG, the new engine covering and the new turret with outside gun mantlet. Spare tracks at hull front as well.
This D-Version didnt got any additional armour platings like the became common practise later. The frame unter the gun is missing. In contrast to C-Version the buckled front plate was mounted again, the notek-headlight is already mounted here as well as the new rear trailer coupling.

Cause the D-Version had 38cm wide Tracks only, a Set of Modelkasten Tracks could be used for historical correctness. To fit these tracks I had to widen the drive sprockets to the correct widthness. The welding seams at turret and hull I have simulated by using a thin rope of plastic, glued into a small gap which I have milled into the the edges before. The typical surface of such a seam I have created using a knife.
The indoor compartment is scratched myself except for the cartridge bag and the gun cradle. The gun breech and the rear outer side of the turret I have covered with Mr. Surfacer 1000. The crew is still missing here as well as the towing ropes and some minor details.

This vehicle I have primed using white car acryl primer direct from aerosol can, followed by a complete coating of Tamiya XF-63 (german gray) mixed with a tip of blue oil paint. Some areas were gently brightened with some more white.
Except for the division markings (two yellow crosses that time; DryDecals by Archer) all markings are sprayed by using Stencilit templates.

Washing was made in several steps, started with a general overall washing with darkbrown oil paint, heavily diluted with terpentine. Several detail-washings followed whereas some surfaces I have treatened up to 7times to achive a worn look.
After the common drybrushing I have mounted the tracks which were primed (black) and whased (brown oils) before.
Heavily used areas at turret and hull as well as the tracks, drive sprockets and idler wheels where drybrushed and micro painted with Vallejo's oily steel and a fine hair brush.
Some scratches I have applied as well, using a fine brush again and black/englishred oils.

The figures came from the kit, heads substitute by hornet ones. The commander got new arms, sculped with MagicSculp. Figures where all painted in oils and acrylics. The black tanker uniforms I have drybrushed softly with a black/ocker mix.
After all a cloudy sprayed thin coating around the undercarriage and that's it for this kit.
