"Where is the 129th?"

A Diorama in 1/35 Scale

This scene shows a fictive situation at eastern front (Ukraine) in 1943. An ordnance officer of german 20th Armored Division in it's all-wheel drived SdKfz 247/B is looking for the head quarter of neighboured 129th Infantry Division to brief all units for a concentric attack next day in Chwoschno direction to trap large parts of russian army.

This Diorama is one of my latter projects but already published in Modellfan, issue 05/2006 as heading story. I like to give a trial on something new and so I did with this diorama, something new for me. Most of the modellers have to adapt their ideas and scenes to figure-sets available on market to create a lifelike situation. This disturbes me till date and so I have decided to changes the point of view and create my figures myself, fitting well for the desired scene. My earlier experiences in changing body postures helped me a lot here. But I haven't made all figures myself and I have replaced tricky parts. By this - only the driver of SdKfz 247 and the three man aside this car are made myself. Here I have used Hornet heads and parts from other figure sets (Dragon, Tamiya, Zvezda) to substitute hands and boots. Other figures came from Dragon range and from Warriors (Set #3537 German Vehicle Crew Sitting). At all 10 figures are placed together with the mentioned armored car (Sovereign 2000), the sIG 33 from Alan and a 12cm heavy mortar 42 from Dragon. All kits got more or less changes and additional details.

The kits were painted with Tamiya acrylics and heavily washed with ordinary Terpentine from property market up to seven times. I like to wash my models in several steps but with low intensity to be better able to control how worn a model should look like later. Figures were painted with Tamiya acrylics and different Oils.

The diorama base is 30 x 30 in size and was covered with a mixture of coffee ground, tea, Majoran, water, white glue and brown oil paint. The higher grass is made of hemp which I have re-colored with different greenish shades afterwards. The cottage is made of a round wooden block, was cut to size and glued together. The wooden surface was heavily treated with differen oil paints to achieve a hopefully realistic wooden appearance. The roof is made of the hairs of a brush, tree's are made of roots from our last evening walk in the forrest. Snow is made of Natron refined with some clear varnish. Some minor details here and there and that's it. Have added some more Pics from the gallery below, some are digital reworke. Hope you like it.

Patrick
